Latest Eurostat figures show that in 2011 the number of asylum applicants registered in the EU27 increased to 301,000

A new Eurostat release shows that there was an increase in asylum applicants during 2011 with 301,100 asylum applicants registered in the EU27 in comparison to 259,000 asylum applicants during 2010. It is estimated that 90% of this number concerned new applicants and 10% were repeat applicants. Overall, the main countries of citizenship of applicants were Afghanistan (28,000 or 9% of the total number of applicants), Russia (18,200 or 6%), Pakistan (15,700 or 5%), Iraq (15,200 or 5%) and Serbia (13,900 or 5%).
Key findings for Ireland:
- Figures for Ireland show that 1,290 applicants applied for asylum during 2011.
- The main countries of citizenship of applicants in Ireland were Nigeria (180 or 14% of the total number of applicants), Pakistan (175 or 14%), China (140 or 11%).
- A total of 1,365 first instance decisions were made on asylum applications, with 75 positive decisions, of which 60 related to refugee status and 15 related to subsidiary protection status. 1295 applications were rejected at first instance.
